Churchfront.jpg (2913 bytes)History of Community Church

In the early winter of 1947, a small group of Cedar Grove residents met one Sunday morning at the home of Mrs. Mary Mitchell MacEvoy to hold a worship service. As a result of this first meeting, we now have the Cedar Grove Community Church.

The Church organized on November 2, 1947 and charter membership closed November 7, 1948 when 173 people became members of the Congregational Christian denomination. The first church services were held in the Chambers of the Municipal Building until a house and land on the present site were purchased. The house was subsequently moved to the rear of the property, where church services and activities were held until our present sanctuary was built and dedicated on November 2, 1952. In 1958, Frazier Hall was completed.

Our denomination, The United Church of Christ, was formed by a merger of the Congregational Christian Church and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Community Church is an open parish proceeding out of the Reformed wing of the Protestant Reformation. The church has a strong history of community service and welcomes all to its 10:00 am Sunday service. The present membership of this church is 347.

About Us
We are a member of the New Jersey Association and the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ.

The Sunday School welcomes all children from babies through the eighth grade. They meet during the 10:00 service in Frazier Hall and its surrounding classrooms. The teachers provide a good curriculum, music, art and fellowship. They close each school year with a Church School Sunday and Confirmation of our eighth grade class so that the adults can learn what the children have been studying throughout the year.

Our worship and activities are open to all who are desirous of following the teachings of Jesus Christ. We welcome all who worship with us and cordially invite them to enjoy a fellowship hour in Frazier Hall immediately following each Sunday worship service. It is a good place to meet old friends and find new ones.

The Couples' Club 1956
During 1956, The Couples' Club enjoyed a year of vigorous activity and continued fellowship. Monthly dinner meetings, and projects, requiring the help and support of the entire club, have served to knit together the organization (new in 1954) and to make it a useful part of the church family.

Active membership totaled 55 couples at the end of the year. During the year 43 new couples were invited to attend; of these, 10 became members and another 21 attended one or more meetings. Fifteen couples were dropped from the rolls because of moving, or change to inactive status.

Our total receipts during the year were $2.371.11. Disbursements amounted to $2,336.55, of which. 1,500.00 were turned over to the Trustees and $231.32 was loaned to the choir. Our cash balance, as of December 7, was $34.56.

Our two major activities during the year were sponsorship of the Choir Concert in May and presentation of our second annual auction in September. The Concert Committee, under the leadership of Jay Pease, arranged for the use of Overbrook Auditorium and handled tickets, programs, and publicity. Bob Herbst's Auction Committee provided for collection and storage of articles to be auctioned, arranged for publicity, and organized a number of profitable "concession" tables. Receipts from these projects enabled us to turn over $1,000.00 to The Trustees for application to the Organ and the New Building Funds; an additional $500.00, realized from last year's auction, was contributed earlier in the year. The officers of the Club, and the entire membership, owe a particular debt of gratitude to Jay and to Bob for having taken on difficult and time-consuming tasks and done splendid jobs.

Club Projects during the Year

Club attendance Studio Players presentation Club attendance at the Studio Players presentation of “The Tender Trap," in March (chairman: Jim Travers). The Club took over the hall for an evening and some 30-odd couples attended; a Club profit of $44.50 was realized.

Catering dinner for the annual Church Meeting Catering of the dinner for the annual Church Meeting in May. A 12-woman committee, under the chairmanship of Bunny Wilson, served dinner to the church membership profiting the Club $22.40.

Father and Son Hike. Organization of a Father and Son Hike. In October, Bob Kohlman and Bob Goeke co-chair manned a hike through the Mills Reservation, and afterward served cider and doughnuts to 70 small and grown-up boys. The hike was open to fathers and sons throughout the Church.

Arranged flowers in the Church during July In addition. the Club arranged flowers in the Church during July and has undertaken sponsorship of a Brownie troop of third graders. The money otherwise spent for gift exchanging at Christmas, was collected for the Share-the-Surplus Program.

Club publicity and Sunshine Chairman During the year. Evelyn Hirsch handled club publicity and Gloria Gardner served as Sunshine Chairman.

Monthly Meetings Our monthly meetings have comprised dinner (served by one of the four groups into which The Club is organized), a. business meeting, and a program (prepared by another of the four groups). Five of this year's programs have included speakers (covering such diverse subjects as cerebral palsy, gardening, gems, dog training, and a travelogue); the remainder have involved group games or dancing. Our June meeting, was a picnic like last year. We look forward to another year of continued fun and worthwhile activity and welcome any couples who wish to share 1957 with us.
